Be careful of cactus spines! In addition to the big ones, we got stuck with multiple mini spines that would have been impossible to remove without tweezers. I walked around in thick socks and didn't notice that I had these things all over the bottom of my feet, and my husband got many in his fingers while setting up the tent. Just bring tweezers and a good light and it won't ruin your trip.
If this place is available, snap that puppy up! You have one not-so-close neighbor - just close enough to make you feel like there's someone to call on if disaster strikes - but after that you're not going to hear anything at night unless it's some scrappy coyotes or a jackrabbit farting. Wake up and take the short drive to nearby Grapevine Hills trail for a pleasant morning walk.
The ground is softer and less rocky at this site. It is very close to Paint Gap 2, however,, so if you are looking for total solitude this wouldn't be the ideal campsite. It is rather large and the view of the Chisos mountains at sunset is beautiful. There are flies in the morning and at night. We made good use of our screen tent. At night we heard no sounds at all, and it was dark enough to see the Milky Way. In the morning we heard coyotes that sounded fairly close, and ran into several rabbits while exploring the area just around the campsite.
